DT Day

This half term's DT Day has been an exciting one, with lots of designing and creating, followed by a showcase in the school hall. Have a look at what the children created.

Nursery children have been exploring what happens to our shadows. They were given the project to build and use a shadow puppet theatre. Linking to their current learning, they each created a penguin shadow puppet developing their fine motor skills and joining and sticking.

Linking to their current learning, Reception looked at the structure of snowflakes. The children discussed what they noticed about the lines and shapes within a snowflake. They used loose parts to construct snowflakes.

Year 1 have been using our known paper craft skills to cut, fold and assemble a pop-up card. Year 1 took the opportunity to create Christmas cards for someone and designed a pop-up tree for inside the card. The children used concertina folds to make the sections of the trees and joined them so that when opening the card, the tree pops up.

Year 2 developed their skills already learnt with paper skills, cutting, sticking etc. to design and create something with moving parts. They did this by using split pins and metallic tape to create circuits which would in turn light up decorations for a New Year calendar.

Some of Year 4 looked at their cooking element for this half term and were asked to follow a recipe to bake a sweet festive treat. They then used different techniques to decorate them.

Year 4 also used levers to create pop-up and moving cards to wish others a Happy New Year!

Year 5 children were given the challenge to make a vehicle that would move in a straight line. The children collaborated well to build the chassis using wooden doweling and strengthened the frame. They then put together their circuits to power the motor, which was then attached to the car chassis. In groups, they tested their vehicles against the challenge criteria and were amazed at their creations!
