British Values
The DfE have reinforced the need "to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs."
The Government set out its definition of British values in the Prevent Strategy: these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
- democracy
- rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
We take opportunities to actively promote British values through our weekly assemblies, whole school systems and structures such as electing Academy Council members. We also actively promote the British Values through ensuring that our curriculum planning and delivery includes real opportunities for exploring these values. Actively promoting British Values also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including 'extremist' views.
How are British Values reinforced at the academy?
Incorporating the values into enrichment and development.

We live in a culturally diverse society and the children are encouraged collaborate and work with all children in their class through use of Building learning Power.
Being part of an Oasis academy means we are part of a global project for inclusion and acceptance.
Children are encouraged to research and discover differences and similarities between Oasis UK and Oasis Global.
All children take part in activities for:
|
Play Leaders are elected to support at lunchtimes and break times. Children vote for games they would like to play.
Academy Council are elected by the children. Children have their voices heard by feeding back to their Academy Council representative.
Mental Health Champions are elected by the children and support their peers with their SEMH.
Parent, children and staff surveys provide feedback to school and give everyone a voice.
|
Children agree on a class charter/classroom rules. The rules are based around the Oasis Ethos which is embedded in all we do inside and outside the academy.
Children are praised and rewarded for following the classroom rules including in weekly assemblies.
Children sign a child friendly safer internet use policy and agree on rules to keep themselves safe.
A child friendly behaviour policy is shared with children (ACTION board evident in every classroom)
A child friendly Anti-bullying leaflet is shared with all children and parents and carers.
Academy Ambassadors are elected who display exemplarily behaviour and character of the Oasis 9 habits and follow the Academy rules consistently.
Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind the laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
Visits from our authorities such as the police and fire service are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message. |
We use Building learning Power to encourage the children to be independent learners.
Children are encouraged to make their own choices at our academy, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As an academy, we provide boundaries for our children to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and planned curriculum.
Pupils are given the freedom to make choices and reflect on their own development through the 9 Habits.
Children are also encouraged to give their opinion on events that have taken place in the academy and evaluate these experiences to help the Academy Leadership Team assess the impact of experiences to ensure it meets the needs of the children.
The Academy Council meet regularly with the Principal to ensure the views of their peers are heard and feedback is taken on board by the Principal.
Our children are encouraged to participate in sports events to help build their skills and have experienced the taste of success through hard work, resilience and perseverance. |
Anti-bullying Week is an annual focus at school.
Oasis ethos and behaviour policy is based around core values such as 'respect' and 'responsibility' these values determine how we live as a community.
Assemblies are delivered through the '9 Habits' and are central to how we expect ourselves to treat each other.
Children and adults alike, including visitors, are encouraged to conduct themselves in an inclusive manner and reflect on how things could be improved further.
Our 9 habits are highly visible around the academy with the characters for each habit and their icons constantly reinforcing the need to reflect on and develop character and be part of a community. |
Embedding the values into the curriculum.
Through our careful choice of curriculum content and quality texts, British Values are interwoven through the curriculum and therefore embedded into the daily lives of all staff, children and the community.
